Missed lessons

The missed classnotes for analysis are:
An analysis of the opium image (on the welcome to AS page) sample textual analysis below and also the Vanity Lair go to webpage for this.

Missing homework:
You must have up to date by next lesson Thursday 25th September, the front cover analysis of a magazine and also the audience effects theories application of one theory to Big Brother.

ANALYSIS OF OPIUM ADVERT
This is clearly an advert for a luxury perfume called Opium. The overall USP that I can pick up from the advert is not only luxury but opulence and hedonism. This is a perfume made to be enjoyed and is indulgent; its for women who know what they want and aren’t afraid to show it. The clearest signs of this opulence is the use of luxury materials, the blue velvet with connotations of softness and relaxation and royalty, these also, seemed to be linked with a message about the softness of her skin and how relaxed her posture is and also how regal or confident she seems.

She of course is the spirit of the perfume as is a convention in many perfume adverts so of course the perfume is sexy, her posture, lying on her back with no clothes, clearly connotes sex appeal and even more than that, strength of sex appeal connoted through the strong contrast of the dark background and the pale skin. This contrast or use of juxtaposition also seems to say that this perfume can be used day or night and also that the perfume is more than just one thing; it is harsh and soft perhaps connoted by the harshness of her posture (she is touching herself) and the softness of her skin (she is so soft she wants to touch herself).

ANALYSIS OF VANITY LAIR WEBPAGE

This is clearly the page from a website for a reality tv programme. The conventions I recognise from a website are the menu headings at the top which allow the audience to browse and use this text in a more personal way than perhaps a magazine.
The overall USP of this website seems to be about glamour and style. The title itself, Vanity Lair suggests excessive belief in ones own beauty and indeed the Lair part could be read as beauty being a trap. I think this is a clever marketing tool by the Chanel 4 site which allows a varied reading from the audience who could either read this programme to follow someone’s style or to laugh at the whole idea of someone taking themselves so seriously. The main image of the presenter at the top of the website also confirms this for me as the image chosen represents her as haughty and also perhaps slightly mocking as shown by the smirk on her face.

The other conventions of the website such as the links to other sites such as A Place in the sun also suggest an audience who are escapist, as does the advertising blog at the top for Columbus travel.

For me the cropping of the image of the winning contestant to a close up shot clearly shows…..

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR WORK!!
