A2 Homework

Following the screening of La Haine. The following preparation work has been set for next week.

Focussing on one of the three main characters, Hubert, Vinz or Sayed, write a short essay made up of a number of points relating to the representation of these charatcres in the film and connecting explicitly with the SHEP of the film. Areas to consider: French colonial history in Africa; France's history of civil unrest (there were riots this year in Paris!); Hollywood stereotypes of blacks, jews, arabs; movie influences; economic environment in France in the 1990's especially for imigrant communities; how the camera is used to focus our attention in the film; use of mise-en-scene to enrich our understanding of the context of the film.

You might like to also consider how theorist can be applied.

I am not expecting you to do everything above. In fact I would much rather you focussed in real detail on a couple of areas. However, don't go rambling off into a lecture on political history, keep if tightly connected to the film/text. Feel free to bring in comparison but always relate it back to the film itself.

In the end this is about using your thinking skills and powers of analysis, it will help you with Med4, 5 and 6 and I hope from it we end up with a podcast or four which we can post and use as a resource in the future.
