The character, in which i was supposed to research was Hubert, played by Hubert Koundé.
Hubert is a very quiet African male who finds his release through boxing, he cares dearly for his family and the only way his found to support his mum and sis is by selling drugs to local gang members. His is also very set on the idea of leaving the 'ghetto' and getting out into the world, out of the Hate and crime his been brought up in.
However his Mother, although seeing her son and his ambition of wanting to get out she avoids his conversation when he say: I have to get out. I have to leave this place." she changes the subject by telling him 'If you see a grocery, buy me a lettuce. "
For me this relates to the saying Hubert continuously says through out the film, except changing who the person is For example :
"It's about a society falling...
On the way down
it keeps telling itself:
"So far so good...
"so far so good...
"so far so good..."
How you fall doesn't matter
It's how you land! "
His mother is just turning a blind eye on the failings of the politics. It's almost as if the film is saying the the audience : Sure you can not do this by yourself but if you join up and fight against the system, not with guns not with violence but by saying NO and standing your ground because its only a government, who we allocated in order to make our views Law.
It also reminds me of a quote from 'V for Vendetta' "people shouldn't be afraid of their government, their government should be afraid of them'
