What are the messages of the film and why do they need to be said?
In my opinion, La Haine conveys a number of messages whether it’s political or about the gritty realities of life in France for teenage underprivileged boys. At the end of the film, the most compelled message that was chiselled in my head was that no matter how much you try to change reality and escape pain, it will eventually catch up with you no matter how fast you run. Vinz was a victim of society and wanted to keep the circle of despair going by killing a pig (police man) and avenge the death of his friend. But at the end, it was Vinz who suffered and had a very ironic death. Another thing which was emphasised was the desire of Hubert who wanted to escape the rough life and was trying to get his friends onto the right path as well but in the end, Hubert ended up doing the thing which he hated most and society eventually engulfed the 3 friends in its vicious circle of hatred. An important line in the film was the story about the man falling from 50 stories and reassuring himself by repeating “so far so good, so far so good” but its not the falling that matters, it’s the landing. This quote from the film is very hard hitting and slaps the viewers face right at the end when Vinz dies and Hubert is reduced to his worst nightmares. The reason why this quote is so hard hitting is because all through the film, the viewer sees the 3 friends go through a lot of hardships and thinks “so far so good”, but what the viewer really wants to know is how the “landing” is going to be. And when the end does eventually come, the 3 friends are back at home ground and we think that they might be safe now. But as usual, society gets the last laugh and the film ends with the friends as victims in the circle of society. This is the gritty reality in France at even this time and the director makes the viewer feels as if in the victims position and presents a fair argument but still conveys the message that if you are dumped in an environment and atmosphere from day one, its very difficult to escape the hardships that the environment and atmosphere brings.
