You could argue that Adorno and Horkheimer's theory does apply to action films. Immediately the James Bond movies spring to mind. In every Bond movie we have the fast car, we have the guns and explosions, we always have the bond girl and Bond always seems to be resilient and 'saves the world' every time. This is extremely repititive and standardising. When a viewer goes to the cinema they expect that little bit extra each time, instead they get exactly the same as last time, they feel as if they could have write the script themselves.
The same goes for for probably every action film. All four of the die hard films replicate this, just maybe on a smaller scale. Action films minipulate the audiance in a negative way. They make the audiance think that every action movie is going to be like this. Action films all have the dominant ideology that the action hero will always save the day and will never be killed, for example I can't remember an action film that i have seen where the action hero has been killed off.
Action movies create an un-realistic world, they show that the good guy always wins, and produce dreams and hopes that seem realistic after watching an action film. This is wrong of producers and directors as it lures in consumers and leads them into believing that all their hopes and dreams can become reality. In my opinion this is where alot of their money generated comes from. They prey on the consumers beliefs and insecurities.

Callum - this is what you did in classs and as far as it goes it begins to explore the marxist theories. However, I think you can go further, you need to directly link the production, distribution and exhibition of the films to the theorists views, I would suggest that instead of general points you choose very minute and specific examples to help you. Also consider how the action genre adapts and if that adaptation changes the view or if the whole enterprise remains 'exploitative' of the audience?
Also, please could you complete and addd you defence of post 9/11 hybrid genre interpretation of Cloverfield ASAP. Thanks
