NOTES:
Representations of Youth in NEWS (TV,Print&Web)
1.News on Print:Magasines/Newspaper
-income came from: advertising and circulation
-influenced by: adverstisers: some sections are 'made' because advertisers would want their product to be near an article that is somehow connected to their product.(youth-fashion) and readers: to satisfy consumers, ratings was made.
*Publisher: the person in charge of the entire operation of the paper.
Her/his task is to set the newspaper’s basic editorial and commercial policies and to see that they are carried out efficiently by the various department heads.
2. News on Web/Internet:
-a global sytem of interconnected computer networks.
-a networks of network
The internet sites created, designed and services offered by these institutions links the representations of youths, such as online chat, file transfer and file sharing, gaming, commerce, social networking, publishing, video on demand, teleconferencing and telecommunications
*these services clearly re presents the youth as an innovative, socialising group, always in the 'flow/trend'
Institutions:
BBC/CNN etc.
Researchers/Writers
*article that links to youth representation in news:
-10 reasons to cheer our teenagers
-Reports of youth bus crime soar
>these articles clearly shows a contrast of the images portrayed by the youth in the web news.
3. News on TV:
*TV news about youth:
-BBC: Youth being technological advance/capable,computer nerd, netizen towards socail networks.
-CNN: Youth represented as terrorists/ future generation with no choices due to the condition of the environment such as war, violence etc.
Institution:
*BBC: regulated by NBC and Royal Charter
*CNN:
-FCC:
-Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (a Time Warner Company)
Major controller:
Television/Broadcast:
General Manager: person ultimately responsible for all station activities
News Department:
*News Director: in charge of the reporters, news writers, anchors, sportscasters and weather forecasters.
Impacts:
-Moral Panic
-Self representation
-Sensationalised news creates youth segregation
-Youth subcultures
-Awareness
-Structuralised point of view
-Sets a trend
-False consciousness
*Factors to consider for the representations of teens/youth:
-Race: Issue of classification
-a way of maintaining the order of a system.
Such as Youth sub cultures: social class, gender and ethnicity
-History: “It is our mind that sets our ideologies about certain things and even about someone but it is our false consciousness that dictates of how to perceive them through history.”
THEORY: 'Youth subcultures as symbolic or ritualistic attempts to resist the power of burgeois hegemony by consciously adopting behavior that appears threatening to the establishment.'
HEGEMONY:
Media industries operate within a structure that produces and reinforces the dominant ideology via a consensual ‘world view’.”
“It is their ideas and values that infiltrate media texts and ensure that other voices do not get heard.”
CONCLUSION:
News is everything and everywhere. The news itself is unchangeable as it already happened/occurred.
But it only changes/differs through the way it RE present itself that involves ones point of views.
Youth will always be part of the news as it is the reason why media (news, films, movies etc.) still exists.
web based programs- bbc switch is one website which has web based programs. their target audience is teenagers and they are open to all cultures and religions. bbc switch is multi cultural and looks at teenagers as teenagers and not as different groups.
Bbc switch has programs which are teenage related ad programs which teenagers would be more interested in. bbc switch is interet based because they know that teenagers are a new generation but are also a interet generation so they ar more likely to use the internet. by using the internet to show their programs they are able to reach their target audience in a way that teenagers are more likely to access it. also as it is on the internet teenagers would be more interested in it as it more technical then something that you would watch on the tv.
bbc switch represents teenagers as ordinary people and not like how society and the media see them. bbc switch accepts that teenagers have problems but on their website they have a problems page where teenagers can say their problems and get help with it. this shows that the bbc are aware that everyone has problems even teenagers but that doesnt mean their bad.
Uk films representin teenagers
In the media now we see moral panic adjust representaion to show teenagers in a more 'realistic' view
Showing teenage pregnecies , crime and sex.
Uk films such as kidulthood show this represeantion and how teenagers just follow the streyotypes that are given
A scence shows how they a juged on how they look and are accused of stealin in a shop.
However films such a St. Trinians show the tribs within girls and how the all come togther in a postive way
It can be argued that Uk films are made by adults a generation puttin on steroytypes on to teenagers, not givin a true perspective
