Following our viewing of BAMBOOZLED on wednesday, I am expecting ALL of you to write up your notes and post them on the blog this weekend - certainly before monday as on Monday we will be reviewing the Black Hollywood essays and improving them.
MEST 4 - CRITICAL INVESTIGATION
In addition, I am expecting you to be working consistently hard on your CIs, though I understand some of your are reworking these quite radically, can I remind you that the purpose of the CI is a Critical Investigation into an aspect or aspects of contemporary media and should be narrowly focussed on some specific texts.
CI CHECK LIST
Does it explore the 5 Key Concepts - (Media Forms, Institution, Audience, Representation, Ideology)
Does it negotiate an issue and/or debate? - (Moral panics, post-modernism, globalisation, effects theory, Marxist interpretations etc)
Is it contemporary? - (dealing with texts from the last 5 years - from Sep 2004 onwards)
Is there a list of text(s)? - (bibliography)
Does it go beyond MEST3 topic areas? - (Representations and New Media)
Is it synoptic? - (reveal the full range of the knowledge and skills you have developed)
Does it answer the question ‘why’ rather than ‘how’? - (Therefore more focussed on interpretation than description)
Does it show your independent research and critical autonomy? - (Have you done ENOUGH research and of a wide enough range of texts: BOOKS, MAGAZINES, PERIODICALS, QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITIVE, NOT JUST WEB BASED!!!)
Is it truly individual? - (your own and unique rather than something derived from others ideas)
Does it avoid the clich̩ Р(women in the media etc - too general, too obvious)
Will it end up just being a list of facts? - ( THEREFORE NOT ANSWERING THE WHY QUESTION.)
I AM EXPECTING TO HAVE IN MY HANDS BY THE END OF P4 ON WEDNESDAY A BASIC FIRST DRAFT OF THE CI - WARTS AND ALL WHICH SHOWS THE ABOVE AND WHICH USES DEMONSTRATE TO ME THAT YOU HAVE PUT IN THE HOURS, THOUGHT DEEPLY AND EXPLORED WITH AN INQUIRING MIND.
In the end, the grade you get is down to YOU. This piece of work is all about YOU and what skills, passion and determination you have. There is still plenty of time to write the killer essay BUT I want to see evidence that you are working towards this.
