BH Bamboozled
Remember that you MUST ensure that I have your first 1500 words for the CI by the end of tomorrow otherwise I will not be able to give you feedback on Monday.
Also, please ensure that you are working to complete the final 500 by next Monday which should bring you up to the 2000. This of course is your first draft and NOT a finished essay. The next step will be to improve this through re-drafting and further research. This will require considerable focus and application from all of you.
Black Hollywood.
Those of you who DID write essays for homestudy as I asked, please do give me some access to these. Those who didn't please write me a letter which will go on your file explaining your reasons for not completing the work set.
And finally, as always, I am expecting you to build upon the work we did in class today.
Suggested areas of study and ways to develop the posts you did today.
Analysis of the trailers for the two films:
Bamboozled
Blacula
Areas to research:
Blackface - history of
Blaxploitation films of the 1970s - Shaft (film and TV series)
The films of Spike Lee
Quentin Tarrantino's film - 'Jackie Browne'
Also look at successful Black Hollywood actors, in particular Will Smith, Samuel L Jackson, Forest Whittaker, Jamie Foxx, Chris Rock, Morgan Freeman, Denzil Washington, Eddie Murphy. You might like to think about how they are cast, the roles they play and therefore the representations of African Americans which they participate in.
Will Smith in Independence Day and The Pursuit of Happyness, The legend of Bagger Vance, I am Legend.
Chris Rock in Everybody Hate Chris, Madagascar!
Eddie Murphy in BEverley Hills Cop series, 48 Hours series, Shrek series
Morgan Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Seven, The Dark Knight, Invictus, Unforgiven
How much do the characters which Black actors are cast in reflect the society of the time and the prejudices which may still exist in Hollywood?
Good Luck.
